Cycling on the island of Cyprus for an unforgettable experience!
The ideal Cyprus climate makes it possible to explore the island’s breathtaking countryside all year round, making for an unforgettable cycling experience. For professional or recreational mountain bikers looking to head off the beaten track, Cyprus offers an abundance of hidden trails along the coast or up in the mountains, all offering something new to discover. Whether exploring the winding dirt tracks of the Troodos Mountains, the beautiful wild nature trails, or the rocky coastline of the Akamas Cyprus is a haven for mountain bikers. The local terrain varies within very short distances, making cycling in Cyprus both a great workout and a journey of discovery. Thanks to the excellent secondary roads winding through spectacular local countryside, Cyprus is also great for road cycling. But what makes Cyprus stand out as a heaven for cyclists is its compactness. The short distances mean that there are rapid changes of terrain entailing a variety of different road surfaces over short distances. Within the space of 10 km you can go from rocky to clay, and steep to flat, enabling you to experience all surfaces within a short period of time, and making the island into one huge mountain bike arena. In addition there are no legal barriers to cycling anywhere on the island except of course on motorways. The Cyprus cycling Federation a member of the international Cycling Union organizes a number of local road races, international MTB races and a host of other competitions, attracting world class cyclists from all over the world. The ‘Afxentia’ race is a three-day international mountain race, which attracts famous cyclists from all over Europe. Cyprus Tourism Organisation has utilized EU co-funding and developed two sign-posted cycling routes, the ‘Troodos Cycling Routes’ and the ‘Lemesos – Pano Platres Cycling Route’, which connects the town of Lemesos with the Troodos Cycling Routes. These cycling routes are part of a broader, long-term project for the development of the Cyprus Cycling Network, which is ongoing. Cypriots as a whole are friendly people and cyclists can be assured of a warm welcome, particularly in the more remote villages and countryside, where life has retained its traditional ways and the famous traditional hospitality.
For the cyclist enthusiast there are many routes to follow.
